Tortuga may expand

International brand Tortuga is looking to expand into more territories.

The Cayman Islands company, famous for its range of products including rum cakes, rum, sauces and coffee, is speaking with potential franchisees who have expressed an interest at the Honduran port destination Roatan as well as Panama.

“We have interest from people who have called wanting to open franchises in Roatan and Panama. We have to follow the development in the cruise ships.

“We are already in Jamaica, the Bahamas and Barbados. We have been in Barbados and Jamaica for seventeen years. I opened those because of CARICOM and as a British company our products were dutiable, so I created Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake and Tortuga Rums of the Caribbean,” said Mr. Hamaty.

New and old stores

Tortuga recently signed a deal to partner with JD Liquors in West Bay’s Batabano Plaza.

“I signed a management agreement with the shop so we are expanding into different areas; we were looking around and the opportunity came as [proprietor Judy Deslandes] was retiring and looking for someone to manage the shop,” explained Mr. Hamaty.

He added that the T-shirt and Souvenir Store Tortuga Tipsy Turtle, which is currently situated upstairs in the Dittman Building at Royal Watler, will be closing this July as part of a restructuring.
